Searching for Ourselves: Kepler Launches

Back online here after two deadly weeks with the flu and then a week of catchup…

Friday, the Kepler spacecraft launched and has the potential to change history. Kepler will be searching for planets around other stars, specifically earth-like planets. It will answer two huge questions – are earthlike planets common, rare or one-of-kind and are any close enough for further exploration (in our lifetimes it would be by more powerful telescopes not spacecraft).

Kepler’s discoveries, no matter what they are, will be huge. If we find zero earthlike planets, if we find a handful or if we find the heavens overflowing with them – it’s a big deal. And Kepler could/might/possibly find more that just if earthlike planets exist.

Exciting stuff. Read more here about Kepler’s mission.
