After finding the very cool Solar System Visualizer a few days ago, another new tool has come out and from Microsoft of all people. Well, from their Research division which has made cool stuff like PhotoSynth.
It’s called the “The WorldWide Telescope” and I encourage you to give it whirl assuming you have a recent Windows PC or an Intel Mac with Bootcamp. It’s a little like the astronomy programs Celestia or Starry Night except like “Outside In” it use real still photographs instead of 3D models for most stuff although the Virtual Earth is a 3D model with texture photographs for the surface.
But it’s fun to play with although it needs more images in the database but assume that will happen over time.
